Disney Cruise Line 5 & 6

Last week Disney announced that they had commissioned and would be constructing two new ocean liners to it’s already existing fleet of four ocean liners.  The small line that started in 1998 with just the Magic, to then have the Wonder arrive the next year, did pretty well.  So well in fact, that in 2006 two new liners were announced that would eventually be called the Dream in 2011 and the Fantasy in 2012.

DCL202123

The Dream and Fantasy are longer and taller than the first two.  I will call the Magic and Wonder the ‘Magic Class’ and the Dream and Fantasy the ‘Dream Class’ because the Magic and Dream were the first of these two respective lines.

We were told by Iger that these two new vessels would be bigger than the current Dream Class boats.  So this has gotten quite a few questions as why Disney would announce so early this enlargement.  Since we won’t see number Five until 2021.  The reason is rather a simple one.  They have to book the shipyards where these vessels will be built, and once they do so, it becomes public knowledge.  Now probably the shipyard can hold this information private for about 90 days or something, I personally don’t know, but they would eventually have to announce it, which would mean that this news would get out anyways, so Disney might as well announce it at a moment such as last week’s share holder meeting in Chicago.

These two new vessels are going to be larger than the Dream class as previously stated, but not a lot of information has been given.  The reason for this is because, one, things can change from now until the boats actually go under construction, and secondly, Disney itself may not have all the plans finalized.  So until they do, most of us will be speculating and dreaming of what is going to be brand new aboard these vessels.

Aboard the Magic and Wonder, there were many fun and simple locations for various activities and other events so that the cruising would be fun.  However, when the Dream class premiered, it showcased even more new activities and highlights for guests to enjoy, since the Dream was bigger than the Magic and Wonder.  So it stands to reason that if Five & Six as we will call them until official names come.  There will be newer enhancements and possibly neat experiences coming aboard.  So what will it be?

First of all the name, Disney has chosen for the names of it’s current fleet, Magic, Wonder, Dream and Fantasy.  So obviously they will continue to go on with this name scheme, I am so glad that I don’t have to come up with this name, because the best I could possibly think of is Wish, Delight, Spectacle and Enchantment.  Though if you add es to Wish it would be Wishes and that may not be a bad thing.  However, I am sure that there will be voting and arguments over the name.  Back when the Dream and Fantasy were still awaiting construction, my nephew who was considerably young at the time thought the names should be the ‘Jungle’ and ‘Cruise’.  Cute, and Disney Jungle does have an interesting ring to it, but alas, perhaps not a good fit.  It would give a whole different feel to what they wanted.

Next, when the Dream and Fantasy were introduced, the basic layout of the ship remained the same.  The top deck being the pool and sun decks, then lots of stateroom floors, then the loading area or lifeboat level of the ship became the internal activities deck, and finally below that would be lower rooms and finally the tender lobbies at the bottom.  The Dream and Fantasy did have staterooms on the pool deck area if you will, and did put a restaurant down in the lower stateroom areas, but for the most part, the design remained relatively the same.  When the Dream class was introduced, they expanded these slightly.  With the pool deck came the Aqua Duck and Nemo’s Reef.  Having Satellite Falls and Aqua Lab introduced to the Fantasy and eventually brought to the Dream.  Also came the introduction of the Teen Spa, or the Chill Spa.  Goofy’s Sport Deck brought a small Mini Golf Course to the aft of the vessel.

In the internal activities deck, the adult club areas were expanded, the teenage club was brought down to the bow of the vessel, the kids clubs were expanded and the layout of the shopping deck in front of the Walt Disney Theater’s entrance was rearranged.  Some other changes was the introduction of a Tweens Club or Edge, Enchanted Windows and Living Artwork on the Fantasy.  But for the most part, things relatively remained the same, while newer Pixar characters were introduced to the naming sequence aboard the vessel.

So now down to the real discussion, what will be new aboard Five & Six.  Of course I can’t know the answer, because I personally am not at all affiliated with Imagineering, but I can dream and guess what could possibly be happening.  Based upon current trends and also from the past. It stands to reason that Disney will keep up the same layout.  With expansions of Disney’s Oceaneer Lab and Disney’s Oceaneer Club, possibly incorporating characters that have yet to been released to theaters.  Next, I imagine that Vibe and Edge will also increase in size.  While the adults only area of the ship, will increase, perhaps from the three clubs on the Magic class to the four of the Dream class to the possible five adult clubs on the Future class, (for lack of a better name).  But a safe bet would be on the Pool Deck, since this is a popular area.  Disney would expand here, not just in pool size but in activities.  Three pools, water splash areas and Water Slides are certainly in the mix.  We learned in the last couple of years that the Aqua Duck came out of ideas of having a Lazy River aboard.  So we know that a Lazy River is out of the mix.  That is disappointing.  So you know Disney is going to look to the Beach, Boardwalk, Pools and Water Parks to find inspiration.  Other lines have put on Surfing Waves, climbing walls and the like.  Disney is probably going to avoid those, just to remain different.  They will look for something that can be fun again and again, rather quickly.  The Aqua Duck is popular and more importantly you can send lots of people on that throughout the day.  Where the other stuff like a Sky Diving Tube might only accommodate a small number of people.  So Imagineering will go with something simple and easily accessible.  I can see Disney bringing more of a Boardwalk approach to the Pool Deck, perhaps something as simple as a small Carousel/Merry Go Round, to something of Boardwalk Games.  Now the problem of course with rides is the logistics.  Where a flat ride could easily fit aboard the boat, it would still take up a lot of room and would have to be maintained.  For Boardwalk Games, you could think of perhaps doing a small version of Toy Story Mania where instead of a track and cars going through various rooms.  The vehicles would be in a fixed location and spin around to different large screen rooms thus allowing guests to shoot in different games.  Seeing that the arcade is losing sway with guests, this could be a possibility, but logistics could still be brutal.  A real possibility would be water slides, and perhaps a larger splash zone, but I’m not an imagineer, they are the ones that have to deal with that.

Next, we know that the restaurant scene had been remained quite the same on both vessels of the Dream class.  With three restaurants in the main dining rotation scheme, an adults only restaurant not on the ticket, a buffet on the stern of the ship, grills that serve Pizza and Hamburgers and other items of the such on the pool Deck, a multitude of bars throughout the vessel and of course a Lounge on the internal deck.  So even though I don’t see a change for number of rotational dining restaurants, but there will obviously be some retheming, I do see a sort of quick service or grill added to the internal deck, or the Ice Cream Parlor aboard the Dream, going down to the internal deck on the Future class.  Seeing that Disney vessels are starting to venture into places like Alaska and Norway, warm inside activities would be very popular in the future.  So more restaurants that aren’t on the rotational down on the lower decks might be more realistically possible.

What could possibly happen, is more options for clubs and hang outs.  Though it is certain that there will be still a Vibe, Edge, Oceaneer Lab, Club and Nursery.  I could see another club added for the entire family.  Or perhaps another adult club that is smoke free.  What I think would be cool would be the return of ‘The Adventurer’s Club’ brought to the Internal activities deck aft.  Where it would get a great view.  Themed it would have charm, and another place for adults to hang out.  Yes, I know that they already have the Promenade Lounge, but this would fit with every cruise itinerary, because Cruisers are going on an Adventure, and this club would be free from the club and party scene but be it’s own unique thing. Also with Adventurer’s Club being a Disney Parks Legend, this would have intense popularity.

Well no matter how you slice it, Five & Six are on their way.  There will be more thinking and processes added, but for the most part, it is safe to say that we will see alot of familiar things returning that Disney Cruise Line guests already love and adore.  Yet, with two new vessels, the Cruise Line will have to change.

Today marks the 10th Anniversary of High School Musical. So as drove by I decided to snap these pictures of East High School in Salt Lake City Utah, where they shot these movies.

In Defense of Anakin or the Hypocrisy of Star Wars Fans

I try to keep my opinions to myself, but after having put up with a decade of listening to people whine and complain, I will speak my mind.  If you listen to so called ‘Star Wars Fans’ they will all tell you the same thing.  That basically George Lucas ruined Star Wars with the prequels.  They complain about different things being done in Episodes I, II, and III that ruined the entire series.  I myself have often wondered what these were.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t consider any of the six Star Wars movies to be divine and from heaven, or to be the most perfect movies ever made.  So, I just enjoy them for what they are, pieces of artwork.  Much like modern art, it isn’t for everybody, as evidenced by some of these Star Wars Fans.  I will begin this by talking a little about myself.  When I finished High School and my mission.  I took it upon myself to make a film.  The first was a film that never really got out of script phase called, The Dancing Queen and yes it was exceedingly cheesy, it never got made.  The second that actually got made and put me on the IMDB is a film called VL Police.  If you have money to waste you can order it on Amazon.  I think I have sold three in total.  It is a mockumentary, following the style that Christopher Guest did, where they didn’t do much writing but it was all improved, which isn’t a good way to do it, as I found out.  I know why it didn’t make film festivals.  You can see it and tell me it’s terrible.  Trust me I know, but it gave me a unique perspective on life, or more importantly on creating art.  If you have ever created artwork, you have to literally expose yourself if you will.  It’s true that being an author or filmmaker you are literally affecting people from your couch, but it is still a part of your naked soul going out into the world, that must be evaluated, sought over and criticized by a multitude of different people.  Some people love it, a lot of people like it, and many have different opinions, while a small percentage hate it.  Before I made my movie, I myself was very critical of certain directors.  One in particular was James Cameron.  The reason being that as a super energetic child who found history fascinating, so it comes as no shock when I tell you that no one saw my point of view, one of those things that I found interesting was Titanic.  After years of no one showing any interest in Titanic, it irked me to no end when James Cameron released his epic film, and everybody had to go see it.  The same girls who gave me weird looks had to study up on the history of the boat.  So yes, I didn’t hate James Cameron’s film because it was necissarily the worst film ever made.  More of, that I had been passed up by something more attractive and sexy.  So that is where my anger towards him came from.  Also being a teenager, your opinion matters more than anything else in the world.  It doesn’t matter, you develop an opinion on something and then your opinion and solely your opinion on something matters.  It is law and therefore even God himself must have the same opinion.  Over time this hopefully wears away.  When I made my film, my opinions softened and soon I learned to be respectful of other people and their work.  Often times, when I talk to a fellow artist, I know they have never presented their work or given a performance to a serious crowd when they are Uber critical of others.  Therefore they don’t understand the sort of humiliation.  Now that I present that, I will tell you another thing.  This summer, a film called Jurassic World was released, this film was a sequel to the popular film Jurassic Park.  For those of us who are old enough, we remember when we first saw the Dinosaurs,  how they literally popped out.  We knew we had just seen a real dinosaur.  Effects have gotten better, but nothing can ever surpass the feeling of seeing Jurassic Park for the first time.  That being said, when I saw Jurassic World this summer for the first time.  I was wholly disappointed. The reason wasn’t because of terrible acting, plot or even effects.  Or even political that it had done better than Avengers: Age of Ultron.  It was because I expected this film to bring back my childhood for one moment, something that director could never achieve.  No matter how hard we want it, there is no time machine that can take us back in time to our childhood.  Even if we could, we would ruin it just like in the one episode of the Twilight Zone.  Upon realizing this, I immediately repented and when I saw it a second time. I enjoyed it much more immensely.  This made me realize that most of the time, we hold movies to what we are feeling.  Let’s face it, sometimes we either are experiencing something very intense or we choose to let something not get in.  So it doesn’t matter how good are even grand something is, it won’t affect us.  Many of these Star Wars fans did the same thing, they wanted their childhood back, so when they saw episodes I, II and III they immediately got mad at the movie, because it didn’t live up to their expectations.  The expectations had nothing to do with the movie, it had everything with making them happy beyond their wildest dreams.  Because it did this, the film immediately became terrible.  When they expressed their views and most real Star Wars fans just scoffed them.  They started to point out different things that were wrong with the film.  It takes a while for them to list them off.  However, they eventually come up with a list and complain about them.  So let’s go over some of the basic tennets of what they say is wrong with the film.

One of the biggest complaints is Jar-Jar Binks,  a character that is a little goofy and very odd.  The character was meant for comic relief and was also a simpleton that would be easily manipulated.  Now, Jar-Jar is not my favorite character, but to sit there and say he is the worst character ever made and that his actual presence is somehow insulting is a bit much.  Even the guys who made Mystery Science Theater 3000 never made fun of Torgo that much, from “Manos” the Hands of Fate.  He was not a good character and he didn’t get nearly as much hate as poor Jar-Jar.  So incidently, many Star Wars fans miss what Jar-Jar’s role is in the story.  He is the poor character who is manipulated to do something terrible for the enemy.  Jar-Jar does this in Episode II when they are talking in the Chancellor’s office about the rising Separatist threat.  They mention that Palpatine would need emergency powers, and only Padme would have the courage to do that.  In other words, what Jar-Jar heard was “Hey you good for nothing loser, don’t be afraid.  If you weren’t a coward, you would pose this motion in the senate.”  Since Jar-Jar was Padme’s representative, every one believed it was her that wanted the motion, because it was legally in Jar-Jar’s power.  George Lucas didn’t create this character because he was soft in the head, he wanted a simpleton character that would allow this to happen.  Because in his acceptance speech for his Disney Legend award, George Lucas mentioned that Goofy was in fact the inspiration for Jar-Jar.  And now you can see why George Lucas wanted to do this, because imagine Goofy, a good hearted and kind individual being conned by the devil to allow such an evil motion to go through.  This is what happened with Jar-Jar.

The next complaint comes about Episode I.  It comes when people complain about the Senate scene.  The scene is three minutes long, and is shorter than the council scene in Episode IV where they talk about the impregnability of the Death Star.  However, this three minute Senate Scene is somehow a disgrace to all Star Wars fans.  I don’t know why, because Episodes I, II and III are a tragedy.  Like all the classic tragedies like Hamlet or Oedipus, they start out happy and they go from bad to worse and eventually disastrous.  The same thing happened with Star Wars prequels.  The three various senate scenes in the movies, start with showing the senate’s lethargy and inability to do anything.  To it’s fear and finally to it’s end when all power is handed over to Palpatine.  Quite a commentary on politics if you think about it.  Since this has happened several times throughout history with the Caesar’s and with Adolph Hitler.  Hitler being a recurring theme throughout the Star Wars universe.

Another thing that often gets criticized is the clones and droids being the armies.  Yes, it is true, that they are disposable army.  That is part of the irony.  Every one was mad at the war, a war that no one was sacrificing their young children to fight.  It was  a war, that Palpatine completely manufactured in order to gain power.  It shows almost the sad fact of this universe that no one stood up to stop it.  They were willing to let others fight their wars, and more importantly they didn’t care what happened.  It has been said, “that is needed for evil to win is for good men to do nothing.”  Truly this was true in the Star Wars universe, very few actually did anything to stop it.

The biggest criticism is the character that spawned the most interest, Annakin Skywalker.  People find him someone who whines to much, Hayden Christensen has no acting skills and the list goes on.  So let’s start with the first, whining.  Some of the most evil people in life began as whiners.  Why?  Because they didn’t accept fate or reality and try to learn from it and to work around it.  These people are mad because nothing happened the way they thought it was suppose to.  So they get even more mad when they informed they need to change their attitude so they turn to darkness to get their way.  Consider Satan, before the world was formed, he was scared of how life would be.  So he informed God that he would be the Savior, in essence, he would be Jesus Christ, and he said that he would not lose one person.  But he would take away our agency.  He also would require God to step down from his throne and take his place.  When God informed him that this wouldn’t happen.  Satan immediately began to whine and created a war in heaven.  Even when he appeared to Moses and Moses refused to bow down and worship him.  Satan whined.  So if the Devil whines, why not Annakin Skywalker.  In fact, when you watch Darth Vader in the original Star Wars movies.  When he doesn’t get his way he does what he wants.  Of course he doesn’t necissarily whine because he gets his way.  I mean, people screw up or say something he doesn’t like, so he starts to choke them.  That doesn’t sounds a lot like a child, a really evil child, but a child none the less.  Interestingly enough, I heard a woman recently question Padme’s choice in Annakin.  I stifled a laugh because she was divorced and the man she was married to was not even productive like Annakin was.  The guy was a real loser, and yet she judged Padme for her decision as if she could do better, because she didn’t.

The truth of the matter, far too many of the complaints aren’t because of the film’s terrible effects, missed up lines, or even plain screw ups.  It is because this tragedy cuts to close for far too many people.  When they criticize the film and someone stands up and says, “hey it’s just a movie.”  They don’t hear that.  They more than likely take it upon themselves to view it as a personal criticism.  Because one thing Psychology teaches us, that often times when you hate someone who is doing you no harm, you are really hating them because there is a trait they have that you share and hate about yourself.

So I will not be surprised if the next Star Wars film is considered a flop because these ‘fans’ hate it.  The truth of the matter is simply this, they are holding it up to expectations that the film can’t deliver upon, or because the film touches upon some weakness they can’t stand about themselves.  I am pretty sure I will enjoy it, I am not expecting it to be the world’s best film ever made.  I am going to hold it up to itself, not to it’s predecessors or to the director’s preceding films.

In conclusion, if it is a terrible film, you don’t have to buy it.  And if you really don’t like it, you will more than likely not complain about it.  Because if you don’t like it, that’s okay.  However, informing others why it shouldn’t be liked is forcing your opinion on others.  That isn’t right, and please don’t ruin Star Wars for us.

Pixar’s favorites

In every Pixar, there has always been a voice done by John Ratzenberger.  This has given him the sort of monicker of Pixar’s lucky charm.  His roles are as follows.

Ham in the Toy Story franchise.

However, other actors have become favorites over the years and they appear quite often in Pixar films.

The first is actress Bonnie Hunt.  Her first role with Pixar was in A bug’s Life playing Rosie the Black Widow.

rosie-02

She later returned in Monsters, Inc., as Flint, the scarer trainer.

Flint

She would get a title or lead role in Cars as Sally Carrera, Lightning McQueen’s girlfriend and would later return to play that role in Cars 2 and we can only assume that she will be doing the same thing in Cars 3.

Sally_cars_2

She joined the Toy Story universe in it’s third installment as Dolly.  One of Bonnie’s toys.

Dolly_Toy_Story_3

She returned to the Monsters universe as Karen Graves, Mike’s grammar school teacher.

Vlcsnap-2013-11-19-10h38m41s75

The next also came from A bug’s Life, Brad Garrett.  Most famous for his role as Robert Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond.  Brad Garrett does lots and lots of voice work.  He has proven a favorite for Pixar starting with Dim in A bug’s Life, the giant beetle that is a Teddy Bear.

dim

He returned in Finding Nemo as Bloat, the puffer fish in the tank that gets overly excited.

Bloat

Next he was in Ratatouille as Chef Gusteau.

chef

However, he does have the part of Chug in Planes, which is inspired by Cars, but isn’t technically a Pixar.  Since Ratatouille he has yet to return to the world of Pixar.

A more recent arrival but none the less a growing favorite is Jeff Garlin.  He started in Wall-E as the captain of the Axiom.

pg-14-walle-pixar

Returned to voice Buttercup in Toy Story 3

buttercup

and did the breakdown car Otis in Cars 2.

47937-29643

Richard Kind definatelly stole the show and John Lassiter’s attention in A bug’s Life playing Molt, Hopper’s dim witted brother.

Molt

He would return for a cameo in Cars playing Van, the male minivan that refused any help from others, nor was willing to admit that he was actually lost.

Thevancars2

Finally, he became a part of the Toy Story series as Bookworm.  This character not dimwitted but merely a hermit like character that enjoys his solitude in return does favors for Lotso.  Often is annoyed when other toys wake him up or disturb him, however refrains in front of Lotso.

vermisseau4

Will be returning as Bing Bong in Inside Out.

Another is Eddie McClurg who became known to us in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off with her high pitched good natured voice.  She started with A bug’s Life as Dr. Flo, then to return as Minny in Cars.

Another newcomer and perhaps a soon to be favorite is Bill Hader.  The voice of the Slug and Referee in Monsters University and Fear in the upcoming Inside Out.

slug

Now, those who have title roles, never have done another voice for Pixar unless their series got a sequel.  Such as Tom Hanks has only done Woody.  Billy Crystal for Mike Wazowski and Larry the Cable Guy for Mater.  Yet, that rule was broken by Dave Foley.  He originally played Flik in A bug’s Life.  At this time, Thursday nights were dominated by NBC’s must see Thursday.  A night that had been born by Cheers, and at this time dominated by Sienfeld and Frasier.  Pixar had Flik and Atta voiced by 2 stars of this night, Julia Louis Dreyfus from Seinfeld to play Atta and Dave from NewsRadio.  However, Phil Hartman’s death killed the latter show and A bug’s Life was followed by Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Cars.

Screen-Shot-2013-04-26-at-09.48.19

However, Dave Foley returned to do the voice of Terry in Monsters, University, one of the two headed monsters in Ozzma Kappa.   So far he has been the only one to do this.  There are probably others that would be willing to do small roles, but truly it hasn’t been done as of yet.

pixar-monsters-university-terri-and-terry

There are many more voices in the Pixar world, who knows what is on the horizon.
